Definition of a Concussion
A concussion is a brain injury. It originates from a bump to the head, a jolt or blow to the head. This impact will cause your brain to twist and move in your head. This impact can damage brain cells or stretch them and as it does, chemical changes occur.
Once this injury occurs, a person can experience one, more or all the symptoms listed above.
How We Can Help with Your Concussion
Chiropractic treatment for a concussion can assist in the healing and recovery time for patients. Chiropractic care involves hands-on adjustments to the spine, neck, arms, and legs using specialized techniques to relieve pain, stiffness, and the symptoms of the concussion. Dr. Maddas can relieve pressure on bones in the head, neck, and spine, plus make gentle cranial adjustments. Specialized equipment is used to treat injuries to the neck and shoulder.
Myofascial release (Myofascial release is an alternative medicine therapy claimed to be useful for treating skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles), this another chiropractic technique used to treat concussions. Trauma in the myofascial connective tissue caused by accidents can become stiff and wraps tightly around the muscles. Dr. Maddas is skilled in applying pressure and stretching techniques to these areas of pain. These techniques can be used to treat neck, shoulders, head, and back pain.
In addition to the chiropractic treatment, hot or cold packs may be used to relieve pain. Corrective exercises and physical therapy are often used to improve balance, flexibility, range of motion, and manage pain. These exercises will be designed to heal the locations of pain, improve the symptoms of concussions, and improve mood. The added benefit is this treatment can be done at home.
Massage therapy is often used with concussions to:
