Headache Q & A
What causes headache?
There are many types of headache disorders, including:
Migraine: caused by inflammation.
Tension type headache (TTH): stress-related, or associated with musculoskeletal issues.
Cluster headache (CH): less common, affects 1 in 1000 adults.
Medication overuse headache (MOH): results from excessive use of medication to treat headache.
There are others, but these are the types that recognizes as causing widespread disability. Of the four, only medication overuse headache is considered a secondary headache disorder, while the rest are primary headache disorder.
How can chiropractic care help those with headache disorders?
If you reach for ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or other medication every time you have a headache, you may want to reconsider. Although such drugs can be helpful for some headaches, they are not in every instance. Other treatments may be more effective.
Maddas Chiropractic & Rehab Center may suggest a variety of strategies for managing your headaches, such as:
Some headaches, especially migraines, are likely to have specific triggers, which vary from person to person. Tension headaches may be triggered by sitting at a computer, as well as other positions and postures that create tension. Learning what is causing your headaches is an important step in relieving them.
What can I do to reduce the chance of getting a headache?
If you have migraines, an important step is identifying your triggers. Alcohol, nitrates (often in processed meats), and other foods can be triggers, as can missing meals and a lack of sleep.
Many people with headache disorder find that having a regular daily routine helps alleviate headaches. Maddas Chiropractic & Rehab Center are willing to counsel headache patients to assist with developing a routine that may limit the number of headaches you have.
If you have tension headaches, you may benefit from regular exercise, meditation, yoga, or other stress-reduction activities. Every individual is unique, so it’s important to work with a professional to identify the most efficient treatment program for you.
Chronic sinus issues can be difficult to resolve using anti-inflammatories and antihistamines. However, a technique known as Cranial Facial Release (CFR) is a more effective option for relief from sinus issues that arise from different disorders ranging from neurological to impact from sports. This technique is a balloon-assisted sinus cavity adjusting technique that's easily performed in our chiropractic offices. Dr. Aaron Maddas performs this technique and helps patients find relief from their sinus problems.
What is Cranial Facial Release:
Cranial Facial Release is a type of mechanical treatment that takes advantage of the skull's multiple bony sections that can move. In fact, every time you take a breath, the bones in your skull flex and move along their suture to allow for the expansion and contraction of breathing. Unfortunately, sometimes these bony sections become fixed in place after an injury and lead to chronic sinus and pain issues.
How Cranial Facial Release Works:
Cranial Facial Release involves the use of a medical balloon inserted into the sinus cavity through the nostril. Once the balloon is in place, our chiropractor gently inflates it until reaching the desired size. It's left in place for a short period of time, then deflated. The procedure is then repeated in the other nostril. Inflating the balloon inside the sinus cavity gently pushes the bony plates apart and enables them to flex once more. It takes a few treatments for the bony plates to go back to a flexible state, but once they're allowed to float again, they stop putting pressure on facial nerves and other delicate structures in the nasal cavities.
The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Cranial Facial Release: Sinus pain can cause you to lock up joints in your neck and shoulders and limit your flexibility. Chronic sinus pain can also lead to altered movement or painful conditions to develop over time. Combining Cranial Facial Release with chiropractic treatment can loosen up your muscles and joints and restore you to your natural range of motion.
No longer will you suffer from the effects of limited motion and the pain generated by various cranial issues such as:
